The story of Two Babies

Every time we go out we get asked at least once if Two Babies is twins. Usually I just say yes to avoid the explanation. They’re not twins. They’re not even biologically related. They were born a day apart. Baby girl was placed into foster care in our home, came the typical foster care way, with an unexpected call, minimal information, and a nervous but confident “yes” to the social worker on the phone. Two days later we brought baby girl home from the hospital.

Two days after bringing baby girl home, during the sleep-deprived haze a newborn brings, I missed a call from another social worker, followed by a text. ‘Call me back, I don’t care that it’s the weekend.’ “Uh oh…” I thought. It’s not a good sign when they say to call even during the weekend. Someone we knew had a baby boy who was coming into custody and she wanted to know if we could/would foster him too. I didn’t hesitate, I told her yes, of course, but that I’d need to see what Daniel thought. I called Daniel and explained the situation.

“(a long strained sigh)……we’re getting two babies aren’t we?”
“Yep!”

With that we were in. I called her back, got what details she had and our adventure with Two Babies began. Baby boy didn’t come to us as a twin or because of a shortage of homes for babies. He came to us because we knew his parent, we knew him, we’d been a support before he was born, and we wanted to keep being a support as his foster family.
